Hey there I made a opensource alternative for these services. Although these worked very well, I was not so confident what they do. So I made 12ft.io github own and opensourced it.

A Simple Chrome Extension that redirects you to unpaywalled version of your web page using 12ft. It is a great service and I use it a lot. So, I made this chrome extension to redirect me to the 12ft ladder. It is open source and you can find the source code on GitHub You can actually just check it out. It is written in just 20 lines of code. That's it. Download the CRX file from the releases page. Open the extensions page in chrome. Now, open any paywalled article, click on the extension icon and you will be redirected to the 12ft ladder. Pull requests are welcome. For major changes, please open an issue first to discuss what you would like to change.

Now I do want you to support the creators you benefit from but if you just wanna see one single article and move on with your day then this might be helpful. It pretends to be GoogleBot Google's web crawler and gets the same content that google will get. Google gets the whole page so that the content of the article can be indexed properly and this takes advantage of that.

It is written in Golang and is fully customizable. I got the feeling that these features should be part of a browser extension the same way as there are AdBlock extensions. I guess the reason it is not is "personal preference" of the author, or is there some technical reason?
