Football was one of the tournaments at the Summer Olympics.

The Olympic Games marked the first appearance of the Olympic flame. The main stadium design included a tower topped with a large stone bowl in which a symbolic fire burned for the duration of the Games. Seen for miles around, it indicated where the Games were being held. During the Opening Ceremony, Greece led the Parade of Nations with the Dutch coming in at the end, introducing the protocol of having the original host nation marching first and the current host nation marching last. In , Paris was selected for the Summer Olympics on the condition that the Summer Olympics would be organized in Amsterdam. Los Angeles bid for the Summer Olympics was without success in and again in During the Summer Olympics, there were 14 sports, 20 disciplines and events in the tournament. In parentheses is the number of events per discipline. Women's athletics and team gymnastics debuted at these Olympics, [14] in spite of criticism. Five women's athletics events were added: meters, meters, high jump, discus, and meter hurdles. In protest of the limited number of events, British women athletes, boycotted the Games. Reports that the meter run ended with several of the competitors being completely exhausted were widely and erroneously circulated. As a result, the IOC decided that women were too frail for long-distance running, and women's Olympic running events were limited to meters until the s.
