Another memory from my Melbourne years that captured the attention of Melbourne traction enthusiasts was the arrivial in the early s of the NSW-built double deck EMU, 4d train, dubbed the 4D set, captured in this view at Ringwood station at the time of its official launch. The four-car set had a total passenger capacity of passengers seated and standing ; considerably more than a three-car Comeng train of similar length, which would only hold passengers in crush load conditions, including seated. However, the set had about the same seating capacity as a Tait train - 10 seats per compartment, 34 compartments per four-carriage set, with no data available on crush loads. As part of the trial, the Belgrave and Lilydale lines were selected as main testing grounds for the unit and necessary works were performed to accommodate the train's somewhat unconventional dimensions.
