It totally dominated in tournaments, to the point that several cards were banned in various formats along with metalcraft. It's also the keyword for cost reduction in cards. Affinity is a cost reduction mechanic that incentivizes you to play lots of cheap artifacts. There are lots of 0-mana artifacts in the game, like Moxen and Lotus Petal , even Memnite and Ornithopter. Affinity was created in the first Mirrodin block in , which was themed around artifacts. Mirrodin is the artifact plane created by the planeswalker Karn, so it made sense at the time to make a mechanic centered around artifacts that rewards you for playing them. There were only cards with affinity for artifacts in the first Mirrodin set. Darksteel introduced affinity for basic lands, and Modern Masters and Modern Masters had affinity cards reprinted as one of the draft-able themes.

Affinity is a keyword ability that reduces the mana cost of a spell by the number of permanents of a certain type that the player controls. It first appeared in the Mirrodin block. The ability is always written as "Affinity for [something]". The most common instance is "Affinity for artifacts" see Frogmite. Mycosynth Golem grants affinity to artifacts for all artifact creature spells cast by its controller, in addition to having affinity for artifacts itself. Mirrodin block 's cards with affinity contributed heavily to the Second Combo Winter and soured public perception towards the mechanic. The mechanic was considered for a return in the Scars of Mirrodin block but rejected because it had been so destructive for the metagame in its first appearance. Affinity for artifacts appeared as a one-off in War of the Spark with Tezzeret, Master of the Bridge. Affinity was always designed to use a variety of objects, but the disastrous first try gave the keyword a bad reputation.
