I was invited to see the newest addition to the Auckland attractions a few days ahead of its official opening day. Weta Workshop, the crazy imaginative film studio that brought you Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, Thor: Ragnarok and many more movies is expanding from Wellington to Auckland for a completely new experience: Weta Workshop Unleashed! Our guide for the tour introduces himself as clone B, programmed solely to guide us through the workshop and equipped with some basic human interaction skills. Weta has three movies in creation that are being produced in the workshop and we get to see the creative processes behind such the movie-making production. Meet Kellee, her partner and her two children aged 14 and 5. First up, we had a browse of the gift shop which itself was so interesting with hobbit statues and a few superheroes too, then we met Matt, our tour guide, and off we went. As you first walk in you are asked to pose for a photo and our tour guide gave us a card with a QR code. You also have the option to purchase the physical copies printed out at the gift hub too. The Horror area features Animatronics and Prosthetics departments working on the horror film Fauna. Each different area we entered was a new world of wonder from tiny villages to spaceships. It was amazing to see real movie props and seeing what happens behind the scenes and how they are made. This tour is not only informative but interactive with awesome activities for kids and adults to do along the way, like using levers to actually move creatures and hearing what your monster scream sounds like! Our tour guide Matt was just fabulous and truly made the experience. The kids had so many laughs and he really interacted with everyone on our tour.

But the guy did stay in his clone character incredibly well for the whole of the tour or maybe he really was a clone, who are we to argue the converse , so this is just an educated guess. The details the creatives put into every room, into every corner, nook and cranny of the rooms is truly astounding. Let me help you organise your New Zealand holiday! Apart from some few figurines, you can touch everything you like during the tour if you dare. Weta Workshop Unleashed Review Like I said in the very beginning of the post, I absolutely loved the Weta experience from beginning to the end!

We will warn you — this post contains some of spoilers — mostly in the form of photos. It has something for everyone, and we would suggest, is an especially good fit for families looking to step into a world of fantasy.

One of them was none other than Richard Taylor himself, the founder of the Weta Workshop and head behind the costumes and makeup for Lord of the Rings and all other! All the praises being said, there are a few minor things I noticed I struggled with. We are living and working in Auckland but in our spare time you can often find us discovering beautiful New Zealand also known by its Maori name Aotearoa.
