Appearing in Chapters Four and Five, the Caterpillar also known as Russel is a hookah-smoking insect who meets Alice after she has been shrunk to a tiny size. It is exactly three inches tall which, according to him, "is a very good height indeed" though Alice believes it to be a wretched height. Alice does not like the Caterpillar when they first meet, because he does not immediately talk to her and when he does, it is usually in short sentences or difficult questions. He asks Alice to repeat the poem You Are Old, Father William , which comes out rather strange like many of the nursery rhymes Alice attempts in Wonderland. The Caterpillar then tells Alice how to grow and shrink by eating the mushroom upon which he is sitting. The original illustration by John Tenniel at right, is something of a visual paradox; the caterpillar's human face appears to be formed from the head and legs of a more realistic caterpillar. After a rather confusing conversation, Alice leaves in a huff out of annoyance, but the Caterpillar tells her to come back because he has something useful to say, and Alice returns. She tells the Caterpillar that she wants to be back to her normal size, whom he asks why. Alice replies that being three inches was an awful height, but the Caterpillar loses his temper and transforms into a butterfly skipping the pupation cycle. The Caterpillar tells Alice to take one part of a mushroom to grow larger and one part on the other side to grow smaller. The Caterpillar later reappears in his caterpillar form but with butterfly wings on his back, sitting on a floating mushroom and smoking. Alice is attempting to escape being beheaded by the Queen of Hearts, only for the Caterpillar to ask who she is and blow smoke that warps her to a surreal smoke tunnel leading back to the Doorknob. The Caterpillar appears in the series, in this version, he is green and portrayed by Wesley Mann.
