All day and a night
An aspiring rapper named Jahkor Lincoln arrives in prison. He ends up serving a life sentence for murder and looks back on the days preceding his arrest and the circumstances of his childhood to find clues to his way forward in life and his survival.
Think of it as a classier boutique release, deserving of a higher shelf placement. The film them splits into three timelines, each delicately balanced by Cole, as we see Jahkor as a child played with heartbreaking conviction by Jalyn Hall abused by his addict father JD Jeffrey Wright , Jahkor getting involved in criminal actvities in the months before the killing and Jahkor in prison. Discarding the flat TV palette so many other Netflix-funded film-makers seem happy to stick with, writer-director Cole clearly has something a lot grander in his sights and he squeezes every last drop from his limited budget, working as if the intention was for a far bigger screen. Via an often insightful and often hackneyed voiceover, Jahkor talks about the prison he was born into, how as a young black man living in a working-class neighbourhood he has always been surrounded by four walls, they just became more noticeable when he was sent away. His toxic father is both aggressor and victim himself, an addict with mental health issues without the help he so sorely needs. This article is more than 3 years old.

This is relevant because Singleton crafted what I believe to be the ne plus ultra of this type of film. And this was almost 30 years ago. Just when you think the flood of these movies appearing is over, it starts to rain. This is not to say that such movies should not exist, but do we have to get the same damn movie over and over? This film has been done too many times before and done better. You can see it in the plot details, the nonchalant depiction of casual violence, the flashback structure, the narration, the revenge killings and its bleak pessimism. Cole makes the same mistake here, but he is far less successful than the Hughes Brothers were. And there are movies out there that do this, that take a tragic story of struggle and hustling and elevate it above what came before. Its journey ends with Jah pointing two guns at a man, woman and their young daughter. Jah executes the adults in front of her before the title card appears.

By Owen Gleiberman. Chief Film Critic. We see how he negotiates existence behind bars, but the film then jumps back into his life. It shows us the journey of haphazard tragedy and violence that got him here, and Ashton Sanders brings us close to him.
