It doesn't have pages and pages of adrenaline-pumping action or leveling up at an insane rate or OP MC just razing through his enemies BUT it had my undivided attention from the very beginning to the last word.

Mile by dusty mile, he gains new skills and learns more about his increasing capabilities. But when he meets Horatio, his sharp-tongued new best friend and a spell card collector himself, Arthur discovers the greater powers to come by building on the Legendary card hidden close to his heart. Amidst danger, rescue, and friendships with both humans and those creatures of the more leathery variety, Arthur awakens to a newfound confidence.

I thought Honour Rae's writing was a nice mix of both. Kurt Vonnegut famously said that every character in a story should want something, even if it is only a glass of water. The card system is weak, this is something I find to be quite common. Community Reviews. This is a much welcome shift in the story and gives it the boot up the proverbial posterior it needs. I doubt anything great will come of it, but it has the right foundation for a fun, uncomplicated progression-fantasy story. No relatability at all. I don't know. From there, Arthur takes on job after job, learning new skills while doing his best not to die. He uses his skills to advance himself, but it is not without cost. Arthur is the lowest of the low since his father's fall from grace literally, he was a Duke. Good Book I enjoyed the book and I am now looking forward to hopefully a second book in the series.
