The Symphony No. It is one of the best-known compositions in classical music and one of the most frequently played symphonies, [1] and it is widely considered one of the cornerstones of western music. First performed in Vienna's Theater an der Wien in , the work achieved its prodigious reputation soon afterward. Hoffmann described the symphony as "one of the most important works of the time". As is typical of symphonies during the Classical period, Beethoven's Fifth Symphony has four movements. It begins with a distinctive four-note "short-short-short-long" motif , often characterized as " fate knocking at the door", the Schicksals-Motiv fate motif :. The symphony, and the four-note opening motif in particular, are known worldwide, with the motif appearing frequently in popular culture, from disco versions to rock and roll covers , to uses in film and television. Beethoven was in his mid-thirties during this time; his personal life was troubled by increasing deafness. The symphony was written at his lodgings at the Pasqualati House in Vienna. The Fifth Symphony premiered on 22 December at a mammoth concert at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna consisting entirely of Beethoven premieres, and directed by Beethoven himself on the conductor's podium. The two symphonies appeared on the programme in reverse order: the Sixth was played first, and the Fifth appeared in the second half.
Shortly after, a very allegro con brio fortissimo bridge, played by the horns, takes place before a second theme is introduced. Portal : Classical music. Saturday 9 December

Among the symphonies, concertos, chamber music and piano sonatas to name only the most obvious , there is ample, if not endless, music to explore: music not just for a year, but also for a lifetime. But the special program tonight focuses on a wonderfully unique and most appropriate showcase for this Beethoven celebration: the complete sonatas for cello and piano. Comprising five individual works, a performance of the complete set remarkably fits within the compass of a single concert. A finer comprehensive as well as compact Beethoven celebration with such a compelling theme is hard to imagine. The Early Cello Sonatas, Op. Thus begins the modern cello sonata repertoire. The two op. Both sonatas comprise two movements. The first movements begin with a substantial adagio introduction leading, without pause, into a lively sonata-allegro form.
