Equally hilarious was the man chopping endlessly at the bark of a growing tree for one witchetty grub while standing amongst rotting fallen logs, which would be seething with them. L ike a lot of people trapped in apartments during Covid lockdowns, I discovered the pleasures of Alone, the survival show in which contestants compete for a big cash prize after being dropped in remote wilderness to survive alone for as long as they can. But it settles into a meditative rhythm that prompts the viewer to ponder: just how would I go? But when SBS announced that Alone was coming to Australia, it was action stations among survivalists nationwide.

In a word, embarrassing. I feel sorry for the young bloke who got extracted due to Covid. A wide circle of my friends are addicted to this show and can't wait to see who lasts longest. Some of these participants seem to treat the experience like a stroll in bush, owing them easy passage. Overall though SBS has gone for diversity over anything else and it sadly kills the show episode by episode. Many reviewers have already outlined the reasons it was so painful to watch: the over-the-top political correctness; the stagnant setting; the many contestants who were in no way equipped to survive in the outdoors; the resulting whining and quitting that started really early on; etc. The result is a group of mostly foul-mouthed, inarticulate contestants who are unrepresentative of Australians in their outlook on life and likeability.
