An author was murdered in a Buckinghamshire village in by a churchwarden who went on to defraud the victim's elderly neighbour. How was the killer caught? Ben Field appeared to be a charming and religious young man who gave sermons in his father's Baptist church. But under the surface lurked a sinister plot to dupe the vulnerable by manipulating them into fake relationships and then getting them to change their wills. Field is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of Peter Farquhar in Maids Moreton. He was found not guilty of plotting to kill Mr Farquhar's neighbour Ann Moore-Martin but admitted defrauding her. Peter Farquhar retired as Stowe School's head of English in and was invited to be a guest lecturer at the University of Buckingham, where he met student Field.

Peter Farquhar and Ann Moore-Martin were victims of Ben Field: gaslit, manipulated and duped into fake relationships with Mr Field as part of his plan to get them to change their wills in this favour. The pair had lived just a few doors apart in Maids Moreton, a village in Buckinghamshire. He befriended the teacher and eventually duped him into a relationship. However, the relationship was fake and Mr Farquhar was subjected to months of gaslighting and coercive control by Mr Field, including being steadily poisoned through his drinks and food. His death was originally ruled an accidental death — something his brother, Ian Farquhar, had questioned, knowing his brother had never had a problem with drinking. The steady poisoning of Mr Farquhar was discovered once police started investigating and exhumed his body for testing after Miss Moore-Martin died. Retired headmistress Moore-Martin died of natural causes in May , after entering a relationship with manipulative Mr Field. She was also subjected to manipulation and gaslighting at the hands of Mr Field, with the intention of getting her to change her will in his favour. Miss Moore-Martin was deeply religious and Mr Field would write messages on her mirror pretending to be from God. He also wrote her letters as part of their fake relationship. After being arrested in January , Mr Field finally was put on trial in August where he was found guilty of murdering Mr Farquhar, but not guilty of attempting to murder Miss Moore-Martin. He admitted, during the trial, to duping Mr Field and Miss Moore-Martin into relationships as part of a plot to get their wills changed in his favour.

The Oxford Crown Court trial heard Field admitted duping the pair and drugging Mr Farquhar to "torment" him but denied involvement in either of their deaths. A jury heard Field suffocated Mr Farquhar and created the impression he had drunk himself to death, a view the coroner agreed with. Field then took advantage of Ms Moore-Martin's loneliness and they developed a sexual relationship.
The writer of a true crime BBC TV drama said she had to leave out some of the most "distressing details" for the sake of the victim's relatives.
