Misty has chewed Ash out on countless occasions, sometimes with good reason.

Ash and Misty met in the first episode of the anime, when Misty fished Ash and Pikachu out of a river. The wild chase inevitably ended with Ash and Pikachu completely destroying her bike, and as a result, Misty made it her mission to track him down and get him to pay her back. However, after tagging along with Ash for a period of time, Misty grew attached to him, eventually caring about him enough to call him her best friend and even develop an often hidden crush on him. The bike was eventually forgotten completely, and after all the adventures they experienced on their journey together, the two consider each other best friends to this day. During their time traveling together, others often referred to Ash and Misty as though they were a couple, which sparked embarrassed blushes and denial from both of them almost every single time, without fail. Ash and Misty both had a habit of getting jealous when a potential suitor showed interest in the other.

Over the years, the anime has presented the main hero with numerous companions. Of all the girls Ash has been friends with, though, none have been as close to a potential relationship as Serena. From the beginning, fans have had a number of ships they've cheered on. However, after twenty-five years, there still haven't been very many romantic developments for the series' long-term hero, aside from one particular character: Serena. A few moments and songs from the series and associated films have implied that Misty has romantic feelings towards Ash. However, these teases of romance were never fully developed, and many of the hints towards a romantic Ash and Misty relationship were added by the dub. An implied kiss between Ash and Serena did occur when the XYZ seasons starring Serena ended and the two said goodbye to one another. Serena is unique among Ash's female traveling companions in that she met Ash before the series when the two were younger; he helped her at a summer camp after she injured herself. Throughout XY , it's clear that Serena has a crush on him, to the extent that it's even discussed by others. While the two have never had an official relationship, an implied kiss between Ash and Serena did occur when the XYZ seasons starring Serena ended and the two said goodbye. That gives her a leg up on Misty, who never had any kiss with Ash.

So, she makes the difficult choice to part with Ash and Brockshown in their emotional farewell episode. We know nothing about who this guy is either.

Pokemon: Aim to Be a Pokemon Master is following Ash on new travels following his becoming a world champion, and the series has gone all the way back to the beginning of his 25 year long journey by bringing back one of his first closest friends. While Misty has come back a few times over the course of the Pokemon anime's various series in the past, the newest episode of Pokemon: Aim to Be a Pokemon Master teases the first real time that she will be traveling together with Ash again after so many years. As Misty explains it in the episode, Ash winning the World Coronation Series gave her so much inspiration that she left the Celadon City Gym to her sisters and set out on her own journey once more. Naturally, this brings her back to Ash's side as a companion. The ending was just too adorable.

She also explained that her sisters took charge, and implied that Cerulean Gym was facing enough challengers that she simply needed a break. While the slap itself is gone, you can still see the red mark on Ash's cheek and the sound of Misty hitting him. Misty ended up saving both of them. Instead of trying to reassure Ash, Misty condescendingly asks if he's scared. He values his companions but has never pursued a romantic relationship. When he finally does retrieve it, he is noticeably relieved.
