Epithelial polarity is one example of the cell polarity that is a fundamental feature of many types of cells. Epithelial cells feature distinct 'apical', 'lateral' and 'basal' plasma membrane domains. Epithelial cells connect to one another via their lateral membranes to form epithelial sheets that line cavities and surfaces throughout the animal body. Each plasma membrane domain has a distinct protein composition, giving them distinct properties and allowing directional transport of molecules across the epithelial sheet. How epithelial cells generate and maintain polarity remains unclear, but certain molecules have been found to play a key role. A variety of molecules are located at the apical membrane , but only a few key molecules act as determinants that are required to maintain the identity of the apical membrane and, thus, epithelial polarity. Of these two complexes, the aPKC complex is the most important for epithelial polarity, being required even when the Crumbs complex is not.

Renal epithelial cells must maintain distinct protein compositions in their apical and basolateral membranes in order to perform their transport functions. The creation of these polarized protein distributions depends on sorting signals that designate the trafficking route and site of ultimate functional residence for each protein.

Furthermore, Warth et al. Hunter M. Potassium channels are present within all cells of the body. The human genome project has led to the identification of numerous additional ion transport proteins at the molecular level. Congenital deaf-mutism, functional heart disease with prolongation of the Q-T interval and sudden death. Traffic 4 : —, [ PubMed ] [ Google Scholar ]. To fully establish the extent to which lateral segregation is operative and functionally important in sorting, it will be necessary to couple higher-resolution imaging of newly synthesized proteins with innovative assays capable of revealing and perturbing domain separations within endosomes, the Golgi network, and earlier trafficking compartments. Polarized sorting of membrane proteins in epithelial cells is vital for the generation and maintenance of the cell polarity, which is in turn necessary for numerous aspects of epithelial cell function. Of these two complexes, the aPKC complex is the most important for epithelial polarity, being required even when the Crumbs complex is not. WikiDoc Resources for Basolateral membrane. Physiology and pathophysiology of potassium channels in gastrointestinal epithelia. Enyedi P, Czirjak G. Unfortunately, the study by Levy et al. Tight junctions that join epithelial cells near their apical surface prevent the migration of proteins to the apical membrane. Blogs on Basolateral membrane. Even when expressed in nonpolarized cells, apical and basolateral proteins can be separated into different cargo vesicles. Similar to other salt-wasting diseases Bartter's, Gitelman's syndromes , renal complications of SeSAME can be better understood by examining the ion transport cellular models of the various segments of the nephron. Some of this complexity may be attributable to the existence of redundant or multipart signals. The case for the original patient showed no homozygosity to any known loci of Bartter's or Gitelman's syndromes, both well-described syndromes of the TAL and DCT, respectively 37 , 64 , Epithelial cells can manifest tissue type—specific or developmental stage—dependent idiosyncrasies in their sorting behaviors. Indeed, Derst et al.
