Beau is afraid letterboxd

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. Beau is Afraid is tragicomedy.

Watched Apr 11 , Beau Is Afraid is the mommy issues movie to end all mommy issues movies a genre A24 apparently specializes in. I think my biggest issue is that certain stretches of Beau Is Afraid - particularly in that scattershot second hour - make this feel like a parody of an Ari Aster film instead of the genuine article due to how wild and weird they are without being rooted at least, initially in some sort of larger moral and meaning, as is the case for most Ari Aster movies no matter how maddening they may become. Going from two formally perfect films imo like Hereditary and Midsommar to something far more… messy - oftentimes, seemingly for the sake of being messy - makes this one more miss than hit for me, but since it mostly sticks the landing, I walked out semi-satisfied, though still oddly ambivalent about the entire affair too. Very interested to read all the takes on it because whewwww will we have a lot to discuss lmao.

Watched May 16 , Not for me. I see potential in Beau Is Afraid , but fundamentally it does not interest me at all. It didn't hook me at any point and quickly becomes a dull surreal journey that just cycles through set pieces and doesn't really go anywhere. I understand that it's a film about the journey rather than the destination, but for a film so long I'd appreciate either a gripping experience or some meaningful themes. There isn't even much playing with form, beyond a sort of generic mid-budget Hollywood surreal which has been utilised better in other films. So I just found Beau Is Afraid a three hour slog. Beau Is Afraid is essentially about mommy issues, but it's all examined with very basic psychology. The film places Beau in a series of alternate families, but that repetitive concept is rendered dull as metaphor after just a couple of iterations. Nothing really expands much further, into wider social or existential ideas.

But he thinks he did everything wrong.

Watched Feb 23 , However, much like the rest of the film, it goes on for too long, and I began wondering when things would actually get going. Nathan Lane and Amy Ryan show up next, thankfully giving the film a bit of charm, but by the end of this sequence I already found myself looking at the clock. Once they leave, things just seem to keep on dragging. I never feel like Beau is learning much about himself during any of this beyond what was laid out in the first 15 minutes, even as we watch entire metaphorical plays and dreams spelling out why he is the way he is. It looks great for the most part, the production design in particular is top notch, but this whole thing feels like a mere exercise in the most basic of Freudian tropes. I give some points for trying, some of it is quite ambitious, but it never feels as emotionally deep as the film seems to suggest it all is.

Watched Jun 15 , Beau is Afraid is a phenomenal, anxiety-inducing and all out intense mess. But a perfect one. From the start where he is terrified for his life after losing his keys and people end up destroying his house was so tense and was incredibly suspenseful. The scene when he gets took in by Elaine and Roger unbelievablely chaotic with Beau needing to get home and Toni not only tormenting Beau but ended up getting Beau blamed for her suicide. The scene when he finally gets to his mums funeral is so baffling but yet so incredible at the same time. Not only that but Joaquin Phoenix plays an impeccable performance and although it is rlly early to talk about the Oscars, i believe he has a huge chance depending on others. I kinda wish this was better advertised so more people would know and recognize the outrageous masterpiece of Beau is Afraid.

Watched Apr 16 , Beau spends what feels like an eternity in a drugged-up haze getting pushed around by his new "adoptive" family. Aster starts to lose focus here, and i was suddenly reminded that the film is an adaptation of a short he made in which never has Beau leave his apartment. Aster here contrasts Beau's relationship with the couple's bullying teenage daughter with his first crush on a domineering girl he met on a cruise ship and, obviously, his submissive relationship with his mother. Beau may spend a lot of the film lost in the woods, but the audience never is. So, there's the sense of 'what have I done to alienate this person who I otherwise agree with?

Possibly not, yet what Aster does so well is give us the opportunity to begin to believe that a heckuva a lot of it IS real. Beau is Afraid is tragicomedy. Aster has finally figured out how to take some of his favorite weirdo-shock subject matter and ground it in real-world, in near-universal issues that some viewers will at least be able to grab onto. False guilt is what I take the preposterous, hilarious "Beau is Afraid" to be about, a movie that could have no sound description, an experience like few others. Yet they feel "guilty" just because. Watched Apr 11 , I felt it got to a point of redundancy that really started to irritate me. New Zealand R Sleep will come untroubled.
