The first and original release of Being a DIK was a Patreon release and included full episode 1 with all the future episodes added via patches as DLCs. While on digital distribution online stores such as Steam and later GOG, the game is distributed through seasons where season 1 was a base game and others work as DLCs, the Patreon release included full rerelease with each new episode as well as patches for individual episodes. Upon arriving there he ends up pledging into Delta Iota Kappa fraternity due to a various array of mishaps that plague his arrival and initial experience as a college student. The game uses pre-rendered CG scenes where player can both be depicted in 3rd or 1st-person perspective, depending on the scene in question. Rather than reusing fixed backgrounds with same character elements with set poses, each scene is on its own and there is no repetition or reusing of any character pasted over background, instead, they are pre-rendered with the entire scene.

Episodes are released to Patreon subscribers as they are completed, whilst Steam and GOG players purchase the game in season packages typically of 4 episodes each. Dr PinkCake is responsible for all aspects of the game's development, including all writing, coding, and posing and rendering of art, as well as marketing and other business aspects. He has said working alone on the project allows him to have complete creative control over the game and avoids the compromises that would come from employing a team.
