The writings of Marcus Tullius Cicero constitute one of the most renowned collections of historical and philosophical work in all of classical antiquity. Cicero was a Roman politician , lawyer , orator , political theorist , philosopher , and constitutionalist who lived during the years of —43 BC. He held the positions of Roman senator and Roman consul chief-magistrate and played a critical role in the transformation of the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire. He was extant during the rule of prominent Roman politicians, such as those of Julius Caesar , Pompey , and Marc Antony. Cicero is widely considered one of Rome's greatest orators and prose stylists. Cicero is generally held to be one of the most versatile minds of ancient Rome. He introduced the Romans to the chief schools of Greek philosophy , and also created a Latin philosophical vocabulary; distinguishing himself as a linguist , translator, and philosopher.
He is considered one of Rome's greatest orators and prose stylists and the innovator of what became known as "Ciceronian rhetoric". He came from a wealthy municipal family of the Roman equestrian order , and served as consul in 63 BC. His influence on the Latin language was immense. He wrote more than three-quarters of extant Latin literature that is known to have existed in his lifetime, and it has been said that subsequent prose was either a reaction against or a return to his style, not only in Latin but in European languages up to the 19th century. Though he was an accomplished orator and successful lawyer, Cicero believed his political career was his most important achievement. It was during his consulship that the Catiline conspiracy attempted to overthrow the government through an attack on the city by outside forces, and Cicero suppressed the revolt by summarily and controversially executing five conspirators without trial, with the support of the Senate.
