Ripping out kitchen cupboards which harbour piles of out of date tins and haphazardly stacked cups safely behind closed doors was always a bit of a gamble. Our kitchen is quite dark and we felt that the large over-the-counter cupboards were bulky and blocking out light. We decided that it may be a good idea to rip out 3 of the cupboards and replace them with two rows of exposed shelving. We never wanted modern shelving and all of the options we found were either really expensive or too modern. Once we ripped out the cupboards we were left with unsightly walls and as we already had wooden cladding elsewhere in the kitchen we added this as a back drop. We painted it in a matte, white wood paint to match the other cladding. It was actually my Dad that came up with a good solution..

It had good foundations, decent-sized rooms upstairs, a reasonable footprint downstairs and a garden, too. We envisaged an open-plan space that looked onto the garden.
