Key art for an upcoming League of Legends character called Briar leaked online last week, and I have some questions. Just describing Briar grosses me out. Her design, and this key art in particular assuming it's real is the product of some very questionable decisions by Riot. One is at the top of her shoulder giving her a nice hair light - no issues there - but the second one highlights her bare thigh, and the other is lighting up her feet. Take my word for it.

While she might have an everlasting thirst for blood, she also has an insatiable hunger for something else. Life experience. This saturday, I have a double feature on my blog. I have played the game for years, took a relatively long break from it, was then convinced by my Discord group that playing with only premades would make things better before finally de-installing the game for good a few months later, then writing my damning article about it and basically saying how it actively makes the world a worse place to be in. Well, I thought I would be done with the game after naming the review my eulogy for LOL, but as it happens to be the game manages to incite my fury even when I am not playing it anymore. Needless to say, all of the following lines, except for quotes I guess, are entirely subjective and you are very much welcome to disagree with me and perhaps even state the reasons why in the comments; but after taking a closer look at her background and creation yesterday, I felt the urge of writing about this topic. Briar is a so-called Diver, a melee-focussed character that excels at closing the gap between herself and the opposing target she wants to focus down. She has no secondary resource to juggle but instead uses her health bar to use abilities, with each activation costing her a certain amount of percentage current health. Combine that with ample mobility, lots of healing, a chargeable crowd control move that can bounce champions back at maximum duration, and an ultimate that technically lets her jump across the entire map when she hits the initial projectile and you have another champion that does the job of killing enemies quite effectively. The Black Rose seems to deal in all sorts of shady businesses and since the members are often Noxian aristocrats there is a good deal of political motivation behind their movements. This is where Briar is introduced: Originally created as a weapon, Briar was used for two assassination contracts, both of which she carried through. However, depending on your point of view she either excelled or failed spectacularly since she basically killed the target and every living being in a sizeable radius around said contract. The Black Rose deemed her crude and ruthless methods to be a failure since it draws way too much attention, so Briar ended up with a pillory attached to her and being locked in a cell to be forgotten. This alone could make for an interesting character idea.

And boy oh boy, does she like blood…. Briar was created by the Black Rose's hemomancers as a living weapon, briar lol age. The light on her feet emphasize the steaks going through both of her ankles, which is a cool detail.

Pair that with the fact that Briar still looks like an anime doll despite her background very much suggesting otherwise and you have the usual LoL character design philosophy, which in my mind translates terribly lorewise. Nevertheless, once her official age is revealed, we'll share the specifics.
