Cnut "Longsword" Ranulfson was a main character and antagonist in both The Saxon Stories novel series, and The Last Kingdom television series, acting as the overarching antagonist of Season 3 and the main antagonist of the first half of Season 4. Cnut was a powerful Danish Warlord, cousin of Ragnar , Thyra and indirectly "foster cousin" of Uhtred. Cnut appears the first time in " The Burning Land " when the Jarls meet in Dunholm with Ragnar Ragnarson after Uhtred 's return from the rather disappointing raid in Frisia. Cnut is described by Uthred with almost a figure like the swift Finan, just with white hair, although he wasn't an old man at that time. Cnut also had a sense of humour and liked to tell jokes.

The series sees the impending unification of England during the Anglo-Saxon period, and it features protagonist Uhtred of Bebbanburg played by Alexander Dreymon. The Last Kingdom was inspired by a few pivotal events in Anglo-Saxon history, including the Dane-Saxon conflict and the unification of all the kingdoms of England. Uhtred was born a Saxon but had been raised by Danes, and he chose to side with the Saxons, supporting King Alfred's David Dawson vision. However he remained in close contact with his Danish friends and allies, and he was the foster cousin of Cnut.
