The team behind designing new Pokemon seems to love making new creatures based on housecats and other felines. There are a ton of cat-like Pokemon, going all the way back to the original generation with the likes of Meowth and Persian. But, some of them are better than others, based purely on appearance and personality. Some Pokemon are based on foxes or dogs and look somewhat feline, but aren't actually cats foxes are in the Canidae family with dogs, after all. Pokemon like Eevee and Vulpix may seem cat-like, but they're closer to foxes or other similar animals. The evolved form of Meowth, Persian looks the most like your traditional feline. This variant has a different coloring, bigger ears, and a more relaxed demeanor. It looks a little too close to Garfield for us thanks to its much more round head and curved whiskers.

This is further confirmed by Luxray's pre-evolution being named Shinx, which is a clear play on the word lynx. Meowstic, on the other hand, is a bit more personable. Both were introduced in Generation 3. But it seems to be based on a lynx, which is a type of wild cat.
