To that end, today the company has announced that they are making some branding changes for the low-end. Starting in , Intel will be retiring the Pentium and Celeron brands for laptop processors. Intel is committed to driving innovation to benefit users, and our entry-level processor families have been crucial for raising the PC standard across all price points. The new Intel Processor branding will simplify our offerings so users can focus on choosing the right processor for their needs. Notably, this change only applies to future laptop parts. At this point Intel is not announcing a change for desktop parts or embedded parts. So technology and names tend to percolate up to the desktop segment, keeping the two in sync. The only differences between these SKUs, besides price, is clockspeeds — specifically, that the Celeron parts lack turbo. The end of the Pentium brand comes after nearly 30 years of use. Originally introduced in , flagship Pentium chips were first introduced in high-end desktop machines before making the move to laptops. Intel has largely been using its Core branding for its flagship line of processors ever since its introduction in , and Intel repurposed the Pentium branding for midrange processors instead. Launched around five years after Pentium, Celeron chips have always offered a lot less performance at a lot less cost for laptop makers and, ultimately, consumers.
Instead, starting in , they will be referred to as the rather humble "Intel Processor" name. The move will allow the company to sharpen its focus on premium Core, Evo, and vPro brands and sell more premium CPUs. For now, Intel will continue to use Celeron and Pentium brands for desktop and embedded applications. When asked how this branding change would affect desktops, Intel told us, "Desktop has no new products in this segment slated for Q1 ' Intel's notebook product stack today includes a variety of Core-branded processors for high-performance, mid-range, and entry-level laptops, as well as Pentium and Celeron-badged CPUs for inexpensive essential systems.
