To that end, today the company has announced that they are making some branding changes for the low-end. Starting in , Intel will be retiring the Pentium and Celeron brands for laptop processors. Intel is committed to driving innovation to benefit users, and our entry-level processor families have been crucial for raising the PC standard across all price points. The new Intel Processor branding will simplify our offerings so users can focus on choosing the right processor for their needs. Notably, this change only applies to future laptop parts. Intel has largely been using its Core branding for its flagship line of processors ever since its introduction in , and Intel repurposed the Pentium branding for midrange processors instead. Launched around five years after Pentium, Celeron chips have always offered a lot less performance at a lot less cost for laptop makers and, ultimately, consumers.

Instead, starting in , they will be referred to as the rather humble "Intel Processor" name. The move will allow the company to sharpen its focus on premium Core, Evo, and vPro brands and sell more premium CPUs. For now, Intel will continue to use Celeron and Pentium brands for desktop and embedded applications.
