One of the many things I love about hosting this podcast series is the opportunity to talk about a shared love of gardening with experts from various fields and gardeners who come from different experiences and methodologies. This week was all of that and more, because this week, I had the distinct pleasure of speaking with British gardening legend and the guru of no-dig gardening, Charles Dowding. Not only do Charles and I share a love of gardening — we have a shared love of teaching too. Encouraging new gardeners to give it a go — and experienced gardeners to try a new approach — is something that inspires and motivates Charles and me every day. So, it was particularly fun to spend time discussing all of that and to hear which of his experiences and approaches are similar, or different, from my own.

Charles Dowding is, above all, an environmentalist and gardening enthusiast. His drive to find an effective and ecologically efficient way of producing food has led him to become an innovator. Dowding has been a proponent of organic and no-dig gardening since In less than an acre, he can grow plenty of food without the need for tilling or extensive weeding. While the exact origins of no-dig gardening are unknown, it is historically traced back to 19th-century farming methods. It is a non-cultivation method that organic gardeners use in harmony with the soil. No-dig gardening practitioners recognize that the micro-organisms in the Earth are necessary for the replenishment of nutrients.

From that point on, you can employ a no-dig approach and allow the soil food web to begin building those all-important networks. Although you may have to deal with some residual seeds sprouting next year. The bacteria, fungi, protozoa — all those microorganisms of the soil food web — will create an environment that is more able to withstand drought too. What does Charles do with all that food? Before long your garden will keep getting taller — how do you manage that? Great episode. You'll get advice for best soil and vegetables, and reminders of what to sow and plant upcoming, how to harvest and store, and ways to make compost. There is also a weekly feature written by three new growers, plus a helpful list of resources. Glad you are finding the same with your garden Thanks for the note. September 27, at pm.

We just sent you a 6-digit log in code. One of the benefits of a cover crop is to protect the soil surface, but the beds of Homeacres are nearly always packed with intensively-planted edible crops. One of the many things I love about hosting this podcast series is the opportunity to talk about a shared love of gardening with experts from various fields and gardeners who come from different experiences and methodologies. My bad. These days, Charles gardens in southwest England on a three-quarter acre property he calls Homeacres. He credits his lack of formal gardening education for allowing him to view things differently than the traditional norms. The greenhouse is used all year long — producing food and providing shelter for seed starting. But to be continued!!!??? We started shooting my garden in March when I start my spring prep, and we filmed all the way into December or maybe beyond I think. Instagram Follow Charles.
