I can ultimately relate to both characters, Charlie and Lola, because I typically stay up all night, or try to at least, and usually am not tired until 11 o' clock, not 6, like Lola. Later we wanted the dog in the TV series to be a sausage dog. I decided that rather than charlie and lola pyjamas her excited about school, I would make her ambivalent, and, to keep Lola feeling like Lola, I would give her an invisible friend.

The idea of my new book Charlie and Lola: One Thing published in October this year came to me because I love the way little children start counting almost before anything else. I actually wrote the story before my daughter Tuesday came along, but it was lovely because one of the things we loved to do when she was very little was to count. Lots of imaginative hilarity ensues. Lola never gets tired. Longer, with a lot more going on in the illustrations, than in the mini-but-still-worthy 'based on characters' books. The illustrations are quite cute and loved each animal involved in Lola's reasons why she can not do something. The great benefit of imaginary friends is, they will always do what you want to do and they will always be there when you need them. About the illustration The illustration, as with all my picture books, is collage, but compared to much of my work, the Charlie and Lola pictures are quite pared back and the overall look is cleaner and clearer.
