May 12, Cancer death rates have fallen dramatically in the United States. Factor in obesity, however — as Gillings School researchers did, and the picture changes. May 8, Eighteen researchers from the Gillings School are part of the two newly awarded Carolina Creativity Hubs, which will leverage interdisciplinary work to fight obesity and improve water access. June 9, Findings from a study led by a doctoral student of epidemiology suggest that some individuals are genetically susceptible to experiencing especially negative effects from air pollution, even when pollution levels fall below current U. April 20, African Americans and men are more likely to transition from ideal levels of blood pressure in childhood or early adulthood compared to white Americans and women, which puts them at increased risk of developing hypertension earlier in life. Avery is interested in cardiovascular disease epidemiology, with specific areas related to heart failure, genetic epidemiology, pharmacogenomics and environmental health. She is also interested in translation-oriented methods to assess the burden of cardiovascular diseases in diverse populations. Multi-ethnic genome-wide association study of decomposed cardiac conduction phenotypes illustrates strategies to identify and characterize evidence of shared genetic effects for complex traits.
