At the time of writing, Cities: Skylines 2 sits at a meager 39 percent positive reviews on Steam , with many players complaining about poor performance and stability, even on the best PC hardware money could buy. Particularly striking are the reviews by players who claim they own the RTX , arguably the best graphics card on the market, and still only manage to get FPS in the low 50s with the minimum graphics settings. On Metacritic , Cities: Skylines 2 has an average score of 76, with most reviews criticizing its bad performance and launch state. Cities: Skylines 2 had a lot to live up to and certainly still can if it gets rid of the underlying problems plaguing its performance. Skip to content Category: General.

Ed Smith. Published: Oct 19, Intricate, intuitive, and ambitious, Cities Skylines 2 successfully integrates all the major improvements that players might have wanted. Something personal is lost in its larger scale, while performance problems spoil the beauty, but this could one day become the superior city building game. Cities Skylines 2 is a surprisingly emotional game. What appears to be an completely cerebral, fastidiously detailed planning simulator, where success is measured against your ability to efficiently position roads, buildings, and power lines, becomes a rare combination of warm, parochial pleasure and extreme stress. You build a new primary school, successfully connect it to your road network, and increase the education budget — look at you, the benevolent city planner, and all your contented citizens. And then the electricity grid will fail, the landfills will overflow, and traffic will back up during the morning and evening commutes. The fulfillment from a successful project in Cities Skylines 2 is genuine, sincere — there are no cheap thrills.

While the original Cities: Skylines practically brought its breed of open-ended city builder back from the dead after SimCity killed it , Cities: Skylines 2 is a sequel that often feels like it took more steps back than it did forward. It's full of exciting and gratifying new mechanics for managing your economy and creating more realistic metropolises. But it also asks you to do a lot of busywork if you don't want the end product to look horrendous on close inspection, and sacrifices some of the user friendliness of its predecessor to fit in more bells and whistles. I'm going to spend a lot of time criticizing Skylines 2 here, because it is certainly disappointing given what I've come to expect from Colossal Order. But I do need to say up front what Skylines 2 is not — and that's a bad game. It's perfectly serviceable. In some ways it's genuinely innovative and pushes the entire genre forward. I can recommend it pretty easily, as long as you meet its fairly steep technical requirements. And I'll get into more of what I think it does right in a bit.

Related Games. Antony Terence. The city builder sequel is packed with big improvements but a fair share of disappointments. Still recommend the game in it's current state as they at least told us in advance that the game was going to play rough at the start because they didn't want to delay it further, and I trust them to fix the issues in future patches to get the game where they want it to be. The larger scale, satisfying progression system, more realistic cities, improved AI and an extremely well-reformed road system have me completely hooked by this game.
