Here's why the classic Clint Eastwood Western series Rawhide came to an end. The '50s saw the arrival of several major Western shows, including Bonanza and Gunsmoke , the latter of which became one of the longest-running scripted series in history. It also saw the arrival of Rawhide , which debuted on CBS in and followed a crew of cattle drivers. The series is best remembered now for its catchy theme song, and for giving Eastwood one of his first big roles as Rowdy Yates. While Eastwood is by far the most famous regular cast member from Rawhide , it was actually fronted by Eric Fleming as Gil Favor, the trail boss. The series featured some dark themes for its era, but still followed a standard formula for most episodes.
