Before there were rose ceremonies and bula banquetswe became obsessed with a different kind of reality show. One with hard hats, hammers and of course a whole lot of drama.

Filmed int he SE Melbourne suburb of Hampton East, the new series features five houses designed and built in the s and located on the aptly named Charming Street. At 27, Steph and Gian are our youngest contestants on The Block. They are childhood sweethearts who met on the school bus in year 7 and have been together ever since. The couple recently bought and renovated the home they live in now in Sydney, so they are ready for The Block. Steph being an architect means they have a strong advantage from the beginning. There are no returning fan favourites, past contestants, or well-known influencers, just a few fresh faces, a heap of hidden talents, and plenty of potential. After applying five times, this determined couple are finally bearing the flag for Western Australia. Kyle and Leslie have been dreaming of this day for over a decade now, having applied to be contestants on The Block countless times in the past. Both in their thirties, the firefighter and educational assistant have experience renovating their own home, which they built from bare bones. It may be an early call on our behalf, but we think Leah and Ash may just be one of the most experienced couples set to brave The Block this year. The Brisbane pair and parents of three run their own business and have steadily worked their way through several home flips, including many of their own. In fact, they even stepped away from their current renovation — a dilapidated Queenslander — to go on the show! This forthright pair are not afraid to get out of their comfort zones, and that might be just what it takes to get ahead this year. Steph and Gian have their own secret weapon up their sleeves — the first architect to star on The Block. On paper, Steph and Gian sound like they have the perfect skillset to succeed on The Block this year. Steph, who owns her own boutique firm in Sydney, SjO Architects, is actually the first architect to ever compete on The Block. There is always one brave couple who walks onto The Block with no renovating experience, and this year it is sister-duo Eliza and Liberty.

The Block is an Australian reality television series broadcast on the Nine Network. The original series first ran for two consecutive seasons in and , and was originally hosted by Jamie Durie. The Nine Network revived The Block after a six-year absence, with a third season commenced airing on 22 September , [3] [4] this time hosted by television personality and builder Scott Cam. The Block has a large number of commercial sponsors and prominently features brand sponsorships regularly throughout episodes. The first season was filmed at Bondi and the second at Manly. The third season again took place in Sydney, in the suburb of Vaucluse. Breaking with tradition, season four was filmed in four side-by-side houses as opposed to an apartment block of four.

Applications for the seventeenth season of the series opened in August until 27 September , looking for couples aged between 18 and 65 years old being sought by casting agents. Season 8 was the first time the series was titled Fans vs Faves. Two of the teams — House 3's Tanya and Vito and House 4's Josh and Luke — had a photo of the production schedule, which meant they knew exactly when certain rooms would be called, and the dates of challenge days. Josh and Luke said that they received the photo but wouldn't say from where, and after denials, Tanya and Vito revealed that Tanya had sent the photo to Luke. Having the production schedule was a massive advantage.

Along with the new faces, familiar ones are set to return, with Scott Cam and Shelley Craft back to host and site foremen Keith and Dan ready to crack the whip again. The judging panel will have a new addition this year, but one that is still recognisable from previous seasons. And although Cam hopes to avoid the dramas of previous seasons by sharing the build schedule from day dot, as fans know, in a high-pressure environment anything can happen. For sisters Eliza, 37, and Liberty, 34, it was the excitement of getting out of their comfort zones that saw the duo sign up for the show.
