I must admit that this feature was a lot more effective back when it was originally released but watching it all these years later at least kept me entertained due in large part to nostalgia.
It is a fictional story of three student filmmakers— Heather Donahue , Michael C. Williams , and Joshua Leonard —who hike into the Black Hills near Burkittsville, Maryland , in to film a documentary about a local myth known as the Blair Witch. The three disappear, but their equipment and footage are discovered a year later. The purportedly " found footage " is the movie the viewer sees. They developed a page screenplay with the dialogue to be improvised.

The development of the franchise's first installment, The Blair Witch Project , started in Myrick and Sanchez wrote a page outline of a story with the dialogue to be improvised. Filming began in and lasted eight days. The film follows the disappearance of three student filmmakers in the woods near Burkittsville, Maryland , while shooting a documentary on the local legend known as the "Blair Witch". The backstory for the film is a legend created by Myrick and Sanchez which is detailed in The Curse of the Blair Witch , a mockumentary broadcast on the Syfy Channel in prior to the release of The Blair Witch Project. The fictional tale describes the murders and disappearances of some of the residents of Blair, Maryland, the fictitious former name of Burkittsville, Maryland , from the 18th to the 20th century.

Without having seen it, the film is extraordinarily rich and suggestive, playing havoc with the viewer who carries no preconceptions like myself.
