Cyttorak is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. A mystical entity, he is the deity that powers Juggernaut through the artifact known as Crimson Gem of Cyttorak. Cyttorak existed as a deity or demon who received worship on Earth until, under unknown circumstances, he was banished from the Earth. Cyttorak has existed since the time of the ancient sorceress Morgan le Fay during the Seventh Century , and even then offered his magic to his worshippers for power, as shown when Morgan used the Crimson Bands to easily bind Dr. Strange and Bolar. Approximately one thousand years ago, a gathering of eight great magical beings took place. Hence, they settled on the Wager of the Octessence. Each being created an artifact with a fraction of their respective power, which would transform the first human who made physical contact with it into an Exemplar, a living personification of the power. Using outside agents to construct temples to house the artifacts, the magical beings planned that the first mortal to find the artifact would trigger a spell that would quickly draw others to the remaining artifacts, creating eight Exemplars. Then would come the Ceremony of the Octessence, where a gathering of the Exemplars would attend the construction of a great magical engine, which would overwhelm the wills of all human beings.

During Infinity War, Cyttorak commented cyttorak he actually prefers to be in a God-looking aspect.

Even in a universe filled with Asgardians, Eternals, Olympians and other self-proclaimed deities, some cosmic forces simply tower above the rest. While intergalactic powerhouses like the Phoenix Force and Galactus have been well-defined and fairly popular thanks to their appearances in hundreds of comics and TV shows, one of the Marvel Universe's strongest beings, Cyttorak, is still largely shrouded in mystery. Even though Cyttorak didn't actually appear until the s, his power has fueled the super-strong X-Men villain Juggernaut and been invoked by Doctor Strange since the s. While his presence has even been alluded to in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the rarely-seen Cyttorak is one of Marvel's most potentially destructive threats. Now, CBR is going to take a closer look at Cyttorak through his history, his powers and his most famous earthly avatar, the unstoppable Juggernaut. Although his full origin still hasn't been revealed, Cyttorak is an ancient, powerful mystical deity who was exiled in another dimension called the Crimson Cosmos. From that dark universe, he's tried to spread destruction and chaos across the earthly word, usually through his avatar, the Juggernaut.

Marvel Comics secretly retconned the origin of Juggernaut , using the Black Knight 's battle with the God of Symbiotes to subtly redefine the antihero's demonic patron. He touched the legendary Crystal of Cyttorak, and was forevermore transformed into a human Juggernaut - a force of destruction whose role on Earth was to bring honor to Cyttorak's name. But Cain Marko was not the first Juggernaut. Cyttorak has had countless other avatars across the ages, who were granted his power to act on his behalf on Earth. Marko's predecessor was Jin Taiko, who served Cyttorak well for decades. But when Taiko's village began to worship another god, and Taiko refused to punish them for this affront, Cyttorak chose Marko to take his place. Like every Juggernaut before him , Cain's first task was to find his predecessor and kill him in battle. He accomplished this, proving himself worthy of the mantle of the Juggernaut, and as commanded his second mission was to destroy all trace of Taiko by burning his village to the ground and slaying every man, woman and child who lived there. This dark practice means that the history of Cyttorak's past Juggernauts is sparse and - as Black Knight later proved - woefully incomplete. Knull's narrative is concerned with revealing the dark truth behind Black Knight's powers - that the Ebony Blade actually draws power from the flaws of its wielder, and is given to the unworthy - the artwork confirms the identity of several Elder Gods: Shuma-Gorath, Moon Knight's Moon God Khonshu , and - perhaps most surprising of all - Cyttorak.
