The Dagestani militants succeeded in ambushing the Russians and Chechens, but were unable to stop their advance. The Mukhatelina in Chechnya was defeated easily, never coordinating its operations with the Islamic Movement for Chechnya. The Islamic Chechens were also defeated by Chechen government forces.
