An engraver and printer by trade, Blake controlled the means of production, ensuring that his unique and eccentric work would always find a way out into the world. A lot of the movie reminded me of Sleep with Angels —a couple of albums ago. That record had the low-end, distorted guitar played somewhat softly and the honky-tonk piano but also similar themes—death, the corrupted American myth, Native Americans, industrialization as destroyer…. Dead Man is a very simple story on the surface but there are so many things the film is about—history, language, America, indigenous culture, violence, industrialization. I wanted these things to be important but in a peripheral way.

Directed by Jim Jarmusch, written by Jim Jarmusch. In English, minutes. The analysis that follows is based in great part on the above quote that opens Jim Jarmusch's picture Dead Man , as well as on the movie's title. These elements, as well as the opening scenes, often embody the concepts, ideas or messages that the filmmaker wants to get across to the audience, in other words, the movie's essence. In Dead Man , Michaux's words prompts the viewer to put aside the logical, straightforward narrative arc and look at the movie from a deeper, symbolic point of view. Michaux's phrase contains two fundamental elements: the idea of voyage and the reference to death. Everything in Dead Man points toward the notion of journey. The movie sets in motion with a train ride, charts the flight of Blake Johnny Depp , a Cleveland accountant, from the town of Machine to a Makah village, and ends with a boat ride. The notion of voyage is the foremost theme in this film, no matter what level of interpretation is being used. The second theme is death, present in each step of this journey. In Machine, there are skulls and bones everywhere, man and animal alike. During Blake's travels through the country, we see death and desolation, dead soldiers, burning houses, destroyed settlements, a dead fawn.
When an injury ends his amateur boxing career, Stuart Long moves to Los Angeles to find money and fame.
Both the soundtrack and the film's score are written and performed by Neil Young. Young recorded the soundtrack by improvising mostly on Old Black , his famously customized electric guitar , with some acoustic guitar, piano and organ as he watched the newly edited film alone in a recording studio. The soundtrack album consists of seven instrumental tracks by Young, with dialog excerpts from the film and Johnny Depp reading the poetry of William Blake interspersed between the music. The soundtrack differs from the film score in that it uses background noises of a driving car while the film is set in a time before automobiles were widely available. Young speaks at length about his creative process in recording the film's score and soundtrack in his memoir, Special Deluxe. For the score, he desired to replicate the sound of a live performer playing along to a film, as was done in the silent film era.
