Design Is a Job is now available directly from the author in zine form at designisajob. The first edition of this book taught you how to sell design, draw up contracts, work with clients, and navigate the business of design. But design has changed, and this book has changed with it. In this second edition, Mike Monteiro not only covers how to be a working designer, but also how to take care of yourself, deal with toxic workplaces, and learn to operate in a community rather than as individual practitioners. If you are interested in using design as a tool for good, building a more sustainable and equitable society, creating workplaces where everyone is treated with respect, and doing all of these things while still making a living, this book is for you. As designers, everything we make has an impact. Whether that impact is positive or negative is up to us.

Ran out of money. And I hope I can pass some of that along to you, this time with a warning: love design, because it will love you back. Speaking directly to a designer may be just what they need—much more than getting replies to a badly formed RFP.

A statement of work defines a specific project, while a contract can cover a multitude of SOWs. Anything I have to tell you can be summed up thusly: charge as much as you can, deliver an honest value, corporate profits are unpaid wages, and almost never work for free. You stick with your The biggest change in the second edition of this book is reflecting this new reality. Everything you deliver on a current project and every interaction you have with a current client is business development. I really liked Frank. Design has a tremendous amount of influence in the world, maybe more so at this time than at any other. People change jobs. You gain enough experience to realize that this new job is similar to a job you did last year, which you undercharged for. The way each maneuvers to get the other to reveal their pricing structure is as fascinating as watching two fat old bulldogs in the dog park circling each other for a genital sniff, but with much less probability of success. Go get it. People are looking for confidence when they hire. But when I finally get them to answer it, most people tend to be very tentative with the answer. You stick with your Understanding Your Value Chapter 8. When one fully takes this in, as Mike challenges us to do, it prompts a radical reconsideration of who the work ought to serve. A few years ago our team was working on a project with a new division of a pretty large company. It contains the fundamentals of being a working designer, including working with clients and others, valuing your work, and getting paid. The frank and open communication you begin here will serve you well throughout the project. Most importantly, we added a valuable member to our team: Gabe Levine is still with us to this day. We wait for close to thirty minutes. Very few are a matter of shame.
You are absolutely right. In it something is also thought good, I support.
