Dwight "Dewey" Riley was the deuteragonist of the Scream series Scream 1 — 5. He serves as a protective figure to the franchise protagonist Sidney Prescott , amid the first five films and is a narrow survivor in the first four entries. Along the way, he sustains multiple lifelong injuries and nine stab wounds, but works on physical therapy between entries. After losing his younger sister, Tatum , Sidney's best friend in the original film , he becomes Sidney's surrogate older brother figure. Throughout the film series, he has an on-off again love affair with an older news reporter and author, Gale Weathers , who he eventually marries.

Each film provides a motive and grounds for suspicion for several characters, concealing the identity of the true killer or killers until the finale, in which their identities and motivations are revealed. In Scream , the fictional town of Woodsboro is besieged by a masked killer who focuses on Sidney, revealed in the finale as Sidney's boyfriend Billy Loomis Skeet Ulrich , aided by his friend Stu Macher Matthew Lillard. Billy admits to being responsible for the murder of Sidney's mother Maureen Prescott, to take revenge for an affair Maureen had with Billy's father that caused his mother to "abandon" him. In Scream 3 , another killer hunts Sidney, implying to have a link to her tragic past, prior to the events of the original film.

Scream veteran David Arquette, who has played Dwight "Dewey" Riley since the original film, says that an abandoned aspect of the character is set to make a comeback in the upcoming fifth film, due for release in January.
