The metal community was turned upside-down on Dec. On the 24th anniversary of the assassination of John Lennon , music fans across the globe were bombarded by instant messages, emails and phone calls from friends and family informing them or wanting to know if the rumors that Pantera and Damageplan guitarist Dimebag Darrell had really been killed onstage. Was his brother and drummer Vinnie Paul still alive, and what happened to everyone else? As the hours passed, the horrible truth was revealed and the metal scene was irrevocably altered. Dimebag had indeed been shot and killed while performing onstage with his band Damageplan. Not only had the world lose a charismatic wildman, a generous soul and a stellar musician, the game instantly changed for nearly every other musician.

He was the guitarist of the heavy metal bands Pantera and Damageplan , both of which he co-founded alongside his brother Vinnie Paul. He is considered by many to be one of the greatest metal guitarists of all time. A son of country music producer Jerry Abbott , Abbott began playing guitar at age 12, and Pantera released its debut album, Metal Magic , when he was Originally a glam metal musician, Abbott went by the stage name Diamond Darrell at the time. Two further albums in the glam metal style followed in and , before original vocalist Terry Glaze was replaced by Phil Anselmo in and Power Metal was released. The band's major-label debut, Cowboys from Hell , introduced a groove metal sound to which Abbott's guitar playing was central. Tensions within Pantera reduced its output after the release of The Great Southern Trendkill in , and Reinventing the Steel was the band's final studio album before its acrimonious separation in Abbott subsequently formed Damageplan with his brother Vinnie Paul and released New Found Power , the band's only album, in Other works by Abbott included a collaboration with David Allan Coe titled Rebel Meets Rebel and numerous guest guitar solos for bands such as Anthrax. On December 8, , four people were murdered and three others were wounded in a mass shooting at the Alrosa Villa nightclub in Columbus, Ohio , United States. The main target of the attack was "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott , who was on stage performing with his band Damageplan at the time of the shooting. Three minutes after opening fire, the perpetrator, year-old Nathan Gale, was shot and killed by police officer James Niggemeyer. Abbott sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. Damageplan's tour manager Chris Paluksa and drum technician John Brooks suffered non-fatal gunshot wounds and were taken to Riverside Methodist Hospital , while road crew member Travis Burnett was treated at the scene. The motive for the shooting is still unknown. Gale, a former member of the United States Marine Corps , had told his mother and employer that he had been discharged due to paranoid schizophrenia , and many of his friends observed erratic behavior from Gale in the months leading up to the shooting.
