While the idea of Baldur's Gate 3 opening up its gameplay mechanics to pave the way for fun plays can remind players of Divinity: Original Sin 2, the Baldur's Gate sequel seems to be able to pull off a more cohesive experience compared to Larian Studios' previous release. Among improvements Baldur's Gate 3 implemented past Original Sin 2 include more grounded romance, attaching values to respec opportunities, and more rules-inclined min-maxing opportunities. Necromancy can be accessed through the Necromancer Skills in Divinity: Original Sin 2 gameplay, giving players access to abilities that leech life off opponents. Moreover, the option to use corpses in a myriad of ways and even create multiple minions at a time makes Necromancy a vast improvement in BG3. Both games feature Default Origins consisting of Companion options with their own story within the core narrative, allowing players to pursue their routes as the main character or a side character to a personalized Custom Origin.

However, there's been a bit of a trend—as TheGamer noted last week, there've been some instances of players getting the CRPG bug from Baldur's Gate 3, turning to Divinity: Original Sin 2, and getting flattened. As one user shadownn02 writes on the Divinity Original Sin Reddit : "Is this game supposed to be super hard? What are we missing? My immediate response to this was 'hold on, DoS2 had its moments, but I don't remember it being that much harder. Maybe I'd just blocked the teleporting crocodiles out of my mind. So I decided to boot up a new save for the first time in years, and I immediately began to see the problem. DoS2 isn't harder than Baldur's Gate 3: its first act is just way less structured, and does a poorer job of easing you into the game. It's not bad, by any means—there's something to be said for the open, immersive-sim nature of Fort Joy. It's just far more aimless. The fascinating thing is: they're largely the same. Both acts spit you out on a beach after your vessel crashes, both have you picking up fellow survivors as you take your first steps into their vast worlds. But while Baldur's Gate 3 clearly signposts the way forward, DoS2 hides a bunch of rakes in some tall grass and tells you to go hog wild. What's more, those rakes just aren't in how the act's designed—they're hidden in how the game's combat mechanics interact with each other, too. DoS2's early-game has three main mechanics which intersect into something I'm going to call the venn diagram of pain.

It's a great game and most of the time truly brilliant.

The world of Faerun is quite unlike the world of Divinity Original Sin. And while Larian built an incredible world of its own, catering to a bigger audience this time is a win-win. Players get to interact with factions and beliefs that are possibly older than them. The Dark Urge, in particular, features an amnesiac storyline that involves heaps of murder with little context.

If you enjoyed one thoroughly, is it worth it to invest that many hours in another game of the developer, or is it better to look for it elsewhere? At their core, the games are very similar in embracing freedom of choice, and the consequences those choices bring. The only way you can achieve a lot of player freedom is by spending a lot of time making the game, not to mention how much the studio has evolved from one title to the other. Both games have enormous fantasy settings worth losing weeks of your life into, filled with waring gods and magical creatures. Divinity 2 mostly only changes stats for the player and the enemies — the more health for you, the easier it is; the more health and actions for the enemy, the harder it gets.

In Divinity 2, everything is told from an isometric view, and plenty of crucial scenes are only narrated. And if the Bioware games since Dragon Age 2 didn't come close to match BG3's quality, some of their ealier games were just as great, if not better. Okikurmi 6 months ago 5. I'd just assumed a character would rise up where they'd died, and thought the game was being glitchy so I'd have to click twice to resurrect. HBK said:. It does feel more 'theme park' than Bg3, but I think that's a matter of budget and polish not necessarily design shortcomings. Overlap these three circles of pain: armour, death, and books, and you get DoS2's first act. In my opinion, Obsidian is still more than a league ahead of Larian on that front, even if the latter made some steps forward with their recent games. Try both, they are excellent!
