When The Killing introduced blockbuster Nordic noir to British television, I could watch with a certain critical distance. Thirteen years on, I have two young kids and find anything involving missing or dead children almost unbearable, so DNA presented an unappealing prospect. Kicking off with the disappearance of a baby girl on a car ferry, it moved swiftly on to the abduction of a toddler from a playground before alluding to child-trafficking. Happily, it was also enthrallingly written and sensitively acted by a familiar, predominantly Danish ensemble. At its heart was Rolf Larsen Anders Berthelsen , an honourable Danish copper paying the price for one shattering mistake: with wife away on business and babysitter indisposed, he took his heartbreakingly cute daughter, Andrea, across a stormy sea in pursuit of a vague lead on the abduction case in Poland. His daughter duly vanished while he was being sick in the bogs.

Which police wo man would say: "have you ever seen this woman - your friend said you both didn't know her" and expect to get an honest answer? Bad, stiff, unrealistic dialogue. Indeed, the central story, centred on the Catholic church, felt true enough to make me feel genuinely angry at its fictional characters. Then we have, yet again, a young female cop going it alone and entering an apparently abandoned building looking for a murder suspect. If one can get past this early problem the story is solid; I liked how the story of Rolf's investigation is intertwined with Julita's story. It gets worse with Charlotte Rampling making some smug supposedly philosophical remark that 'he is his choices' Is there a statute of limitation for kidnapping in France. You'd leave a baby alone on deck in a storm to go and puke up indoors? After all, the father has thrown the ice cream stick into the river. But the script keeps throwing me off. Intertwined with this we see what is happening to Julita, a young, pregnant Polish woman, who has sought help at a convent.

You just sit back and wonder if there were ever a filmmaker going over the manuscript before shooting. But it soon develops into an engaging and tightly plotted story, in which the importance of DNA is not what we first might think. Presumably shes not bothered now that she's pregnant with her new partner's child. The prologue sets things up nicely giving our protagonist extra motivation to solve the case. I can't say if it's the lines or the directors fault, but the actors have done so much better before, that this is really painfull at times for me to watch. And what about the biological mother ie his original wife. The polish girl arrives at a convent the minute her baby is being transferred to a car. Surely it was the wrong age? This show might be the worst in a long time. It's not too hard to look past them, but for a Danish crime show it's definitely not one of the best. A couple simply hand over their adopted daughter with about 6 people in a room with huge internal windows, so unrealistic. Create a list ».
