One of our all-time favorite Private Practice characters was Dr. Violet Turner — who was played by Amy Brenneman — mostly because she had some crazy storylines throughout the series. In this episode, Pete attends a funeral with Naomi and Sam, while at another time he is horrified to find Violet attacked and bleeding in her home with her unborn child missing. She is rushed into the hospital and Addison begins to operate, and in a flashback Cooper and Violet move into their new office, unnerved by their bosses' happy marriage. Violet then meets her new patient, Pete, whose wife died quite suddenly, and he admits that he finds therapy "artificial" and unhelpful. In the present, the doctors inform the cops that disturbed patient Katie is likely Violet's attacker, and Sheldon arrives in a panic, declaring that he is "also" the father of her baby. A distraught Cooper blames himself, as he was nearby during the attack, but Charlotte firmly tells him that only Katie is at fault. Tensions flare between Pete and Sheldon as Naomi and Addison operate, and Dell tries to comfort the unconscious Violet, begging her not to die. In the past, the doctors debate hiring Pete to their new clinic, though Violet objects, pointing out that he is her patient and has not yet dealt with his issues. Sheldon debates the power of faith, and Addison considers performing a hysterectomy to save Violet's life. Naomi objects, saying that her baby might already be dead and she should have the chance for another, but Pete demands that they save her at all costs. Addison finally asks Cooper, who knows her best, and he tells them to try to save her reproductive organs. In the past, Pete returns informs Violet that she cannot "figure him out," adding that she is unqualified to judge him because she is unmarried. Katie arrives at the hospital with "her" newborn, really Violet's, and Cooper carefully plays along and casually asks to inspect the baby. Katie hands him over and is quickly arrested, and they soon discover that the baby too needs surgery. Addison decides to work on the infant, tasking Naomi with finishing Violet's operation. In the flashback, Pete tells Sam that he is uncomfortable with Violet and is through with her therapy, but Sam suggests that he is merely unlucky.

A Death in the Family is the season three premiere and the 32nd overall episode of Private Practice. After Pete discovers Violet dying on the floor of her home, having barely survived a violent attack from her patient, Katie, he rushes her to the hospital where Addison and Naomi fight to save her life. Addison and Pete become a couple, which causes Addison to get close to Lucas until Violet wants him back, even going as far as taking Pete to court to get joint custody. Sheldon starts to fall for Charlotte after they start to sleep together.

Though she tells her patients that "happiness can be attained with focus", she fails to find any happiness in her own life and she even questions the usefulness of her chosen profession. Six months previously, her boyfriend Allan had ended their romantic relationship, devastating her. The situation was made worse when she ran into Allan in a supermarket, only to discover that he married a younger woman only a few months after their break-up. This has shaken Violet badly and she continues to telephone Allan as she tries to deal with their dissolved relationship. Violet is highly offended by women who lie about being raped.
