Doom map secrets

The new Doom contains 13 secret levels and hidden areas themed after classic Doom retro stages. Finding each of these unlocks the full level for play in the Doom main menu. These levels are each activated by finding and pulling a hidden lever, then navigating to the doom map secrets level entrance.

Secret maps are a fascinating and, I believe, underexamined topic in Doom mapping. I'm very curious to see what the community's players and designers think about secret maps, so here are few questions to guide the discussion:. How rigorously do you try to hide them? What existing secret maps, if any, have inspired you or informed your own work in some way? If so, what do you like to see in secret levels? Are there any you really enjoyed that you don't think get enough attention? You know, I've always pooh-poohed Doom 1's secret maps, not as being bad maps, but as being "bad secrets" due to feeling pretty normal - I was always of the opinion that Doom2's more gimmicky but also entertaining idea of having it be a couple of old Wolf3D levels was far more charming.

It's that it's frankly been a long time since we had a straight-up, old-school first-person shooter campaign with this much meat on its bones.
