A screenshot from the PlayStation version of Doom. It was released on November 16, and ran with a modified version of the Doom engine used in the Atari Jaguar port. Multiplayer was unusual in that splitscreen was unavailable; two consoles had to be linked together instead. This made the multiplayer truer to the original, but it was done at the sacrifice of accessibility. Presumably two players or more running on one console would reduce the speed of the game dramatically. Although the box does not mention the Master Levels, the back cover of the instructions indeed acknowledges their inclusion.

By xvertigox , January 21, in Console Doom. I expected it to worth playing purely for novelty but it's surprised me with how good the gameplay actually is. I'm playing it on my Xbox Series X via emulator but the controls feel so much nicer than the Unity port. It might be the fact that I'm using the dpad and always run is off so I'll have to test that in the new port. I was disappointed with the dialed back Jaguar maps but the colored lighting adds a lot of depth and emphasizes the purposeful texture work of American McGee. The animated sky helps set the dark atmospheric tone of this port. The tone is compounded exponentially by the far darker twisted ambient soundtrack one of the last maps I was playing had babies crying in the background The chiller music is balanced by the punchier Doom 64 monster and weapon sounds. The shotgun sounds especially beefy. It's not just the difference in the map architecture that holds my curiosity, it's the gameplay as well. Having the whole of Ultimate Doom be one big continuous series of maps makes me much more invested in the playthrough. One large experience gets my buy-in a lot more than bite-sized episodes. It also means the balancing can change as suddenly with E2M1 you've got an episodes worth of weapons and need the monsters to compensate. I'm looking forward to see what Final Doom has in store for me.

A single-level demo version of PlayStation Doom was produced by Williams, both as a stand-alone disc and included into several demo compilations which shipped as magazine issue pack-in bonuses. Level Spawning Vats. Level Refinery.

Although the box does not mention the Master Levels, the back cover of the instruction manual acknowledges their inclusion. The gameplay tends to be somewhat slower, with darker rooms, grittier graphics, disturbing sound effects and music that ranges from melancholy to extremely frightening. This is still an action game, but it often feels more like a survival horror than a run-and-gun. Maps are called "levels". There are 30 levels, with none of them being secret levels, split into three episodes: The Master Levels, which makes up the majority of the game; TNT notably not called "TNT Evilution" as is usual ; and Plutonia, of which only a handful of levels made the cut. While many PlayStation Final Doom maps were altered to simplify geometry, amend monster deployment, lower room heights, and use fewer, more consistent flats and textures, the levels are generally far more intact and much more detailed than in Ultimate Doom and Doom II. As a result, lower frame rates are achieved in a number of maps. Escaping these maps is not something you do quickly.

The pre-release demonstration of PlayStation Doom given by Williams at E3 was introduced with a short stage show featuring the motion capture actors from Mortal Kombat 3. Since The Marshes is accessible from the penultimate map of Ultimate Doom, and the super shotgun can therefore only be used in Ultimate Doom maps which are exclusive to the PlayStation port The Marshes and Threshold of Pain , the impact of this weapon in Ultimate Doom is negligible.
