I am excited to be working with Alloy as a Medical Advisor and would like to introduce myself to the Alloy community. My path to becoming a menopause specialist has been deeply informed by my own experience as a patient navigating menopause. This shocking diagnosis came just a month after losing my mother to ovarian cancer. That was the start of my journey into menopause, not once—but three times! First, I was plunged into menopause during my intense chemotherapy, juggling the side effects of chemo with menopause symptoms. Eventually, about six months after finishing treatment, my ovarian function recovered and my periods returned. I started to feel like myself again.

The need for better management of symptoms for women in surgically or medically induced menopause is undeniable. In this episode, we navigate through the complexities of menopause and breast cancer, with Dr Corinne Menn, a board-certified OBGYN and a breast cancer survivor, shedding light on this often overlooked and too often dismissed topic. Not only does Dr Menn share her journey with us, but she also highlights the urgent need for education in this area. Menn's unfiltered discourse on her journey through menopause and breast cancer treatment is insightful and empowering. We dive deep into the ethical responsibility of doctors who induce forced menopause states, and the challenges in distinguishing between menopause and chemotherapy symptoms. We also discuss the controversial issue of hormone therapy for breast cancer survivors and explore the effects of hormone replacement therapy HRT on breast cancer risk and the potential benefits of HRT. We also include the importance of non-hormonal methods for managing menopausal symptoms. I'm proud that this episode is a powerful narrative that combines personal experiences with evidence-based discussions. Thank you for listening to my show!

Corinne Menn - Oct 18, Round One First, I was plunged into menopause during my intense chemotherapy, juggling the side effects of chemo with menopause symptoms. And all of these things are like a vicious cycle and really impact quality of life. So I tell patients I get it. So then the Lupron, boom, second experience with menopause from the Lupron shutting down my ovaries and then taking tamoxifen in addition. There is nothing binary about any of it, right? What it doesn't do: Raise the risk of breast cancer. Because basically, every study out there, every book of data says that locally applied estrogen is not systemic and is extremely, extremely safe if you are using an aromatase inhibitor. I see a lot of women suffer on aromatase inhibitors and some women need to stick to those aromatase inhibitors because they have a very high risk disease and that aromatase inhibitor in studies has been shown to be a bit more powerful than tamoxifen.

When women are taking tamoxifen, this is something that I want women to understand. A common cause of sepsis is from a UTI. We have this one poorly designed study that basically actually had a lot of positive findings, and then this one blip of local recurrence. In fact, women who take tamoxifen have higher circulating levels of estrogen. Women deserve more. But if you say, hey, I want to set aside a time, I want to talk about menopausal hormone therapy. I started to feel like myself again. Because the Lupron is shutting down the ovaries, not allowing estrogen to be produced. Because guess what? So I tell patients I get it.
