Summer seems to disappear quicker and quicker. One of the first signs of the end of summer is the installation of the ice at the Memorial Arena. Last week, the crew from the Town of Drumheller fired up the ice plant and began to install the hockey rink ice for the upcoming season. We have to get the concrete base as clean as possible and prep around the boards for caulking before we can actually fire up the plant. After that, we have to put some sealing coats in, 5 to 7, and then we start with those floods and we get it up to a certain degree. We put in the whiting paint and seal that in and add more layers before we add the lines and the logos on the ice. There is quite a bit of work that goes into the painting of the ice surface, unlike some other arenas. We here have all of our lines and logos hand-painted," notes Rafter. They do some themselves but also work with a company out of Cochrane for most of the logo work. If you look closely at some of the logos, you can see the brush strokes.
