I recently bought a Squier VM Jazz V from someone who had already changed the pots and cabling to a higher standard, but left the Duncan Designed pickups in. I have been playing the bass for the last few days and can't get over the feeling that the low B is not great sounding and the general tone is mid-frequency overloaded. Also, there is quite a bit of noise that may be due in part to an amateurish soldering job, I don't know. I have never used them and now I am feeling tempted to install them in this bass.

By pathofspirit May 9, in Electric Guitars. Any thoughts on the "Duncan Designed" pickups that come on some of the Squire strats? Are they of a vastly different quality than Semour Duncans? There are currently several humbuckers available in the Duncan Designed range, each of which is neck or bridge position-calibrated and was modeled after a USA-built model. I've got the HB set that came with my Schecter and never switched them out; to my surprise they were perfect. HB's in my Schecter were not so hot. And this is not because the Duncan Designed pickups have not been equal to more boutique pickups. For example, the Duncan Designed lipsticks on the recent incarnations of Danelectro guitars are inferior to the lipsticks on the earlier reissues. I'm not comparing DDs with pickups costing a great deal more money; I am comparing them with pickups that probably cost less than DDs--and the DDs have not fared well in comparison. They have been shrill and without character. Just dont buy them for or in a guitar and expect them to sound like the real Duncans. I do have plans to replace them with an Invader and a Dimebucker. Remember, "modeled after" in the music instrument industry is the same thing as "based on" in the movie industry.
The problem, as you point out, is that the supplier then has duncan designed pickups convince the consumer that they should pay more for the "brand name" product, which in many cases is exactly the same.

Seymour Duncan have been a leading guitar pickup brand for a long time. Duncan Designed pickups are based on the original Seymour Duncan line, offering more affordable models. Seymour Duncan make high-end pickups which sound very clear, whereas Duncan Designed pickups tend to sound a bit muddier and less focused. Seymour Duncan pickups can be found on mid-high end guitars or can be purchased separately, whilst Duncan Designed pickups can only be found on mid-priced guitars. Seymour Duncan make high-end pickups in the USA. They are best known in the industry for their passive pickups, however they do make some active designs as well.

Having said that bear in mind I don't get on with 5-stringers anyway, the 'B' string always seems like it's from a different planet, but that's probably a mental abberation on my part I'll save up for the real thing. On the other hand, I have certainly heard some pickups that provided an overall "more desirable" sound than stock models and I know the differences were not a product of my imagination.
