We know that dyslexia comes with many challenges, but people in our community can feel like their barriers are stronger than those who do not live with dyslexia or other neurodiversity. We believe a society that embraces and promotes neurodiversity is kinder, more creative and empowered. Chair of the Board of Trustees, Michelle Catterson says, "Dyslexia Awareness Week is a hugely important week in raising the profile for those with Dyslexia. The stigma around dyslexia unfortunately still exists for some, therefore talking openly about dyslexia is vital. The work of the BDA is essential throughout the year; however, we use this important week in our calendar to push our vision further and help as many as we possibly can.

This October, the Dyslexia Association of Ireland will be celebrating Dyslexia Awareness Month, along with dyslexia organisations worldwide. Our focus this year will be on Dyslexia Rights specifically the right to assessment, the right to identity and the right to supports. Right to Assessment — Access to dyslexia assessment remains challenging for both children and adults. We will be campaigning for greater access to assessment in schools, and support for those left but with no option but to seek a private assessment. We are also calling for an increase in postgraduate training places for educational psychologists to meet the need for trained assessors. Right to Identity — The difficulty accessing assessment means that the benefit of identity is denied to many, leading to a negative impact on the self-esteem and mental health of those left waiting. Better and earlier identification of dyslexia will decrease the mental health impacts and enable better understanding. We are also calling for Government circulars and guidance to acknowledge the importance of the word dyslexia to those impacted by it and include the word in all relevant documentation. Right to Supports — Individuals with dyslexia of all ages experience challenges accessing necessary supports.
