Stanley Whitney invited professor and musician-biographer John Szwed to his studio in Long Island as he prepared for an upcoming survey at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum to discuss the resonances between painting and jazz. One of the most important living American artist is still refining his relationship to colour and text — and still chasing the desire to make great paintings. F or a time, Ed Ruscha thought of turning the sun 90 degrees. While 10 of the 14 new works in the show are larger than usual for the artist, they feature unmistakable Ruscha motifs, like text over barren landscapes, and images of mountains, which harken back to his Metro Plot series of the late 90s. Another painting, Really Old, featuring a reddish smudge burning in the center of a warm beige surface, is an outlier for an artist not normally known as a colorist. Commonly considered the quintessential LA artist, Ruscha and a friend, Mason Williams, left their homes in Oklahoma City and drove west to Los Angeles soon after graduating high school in Along with many of his classmates, he felt trapped within the confines of the prevalent form at the time, abstract expressionism, but was inspired by the works of Jasper Johns , who seemed to be pointing in a new direction. Just two years after graduating Chouinard, his work appeared in the pivotal show, New Painting of Common Objects at the legendary Ferus Gallery , putting him in the company of future stars like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. Pop Art was born and Ruscha was directly in its midst. He made his first sale to a gallery regular, actor Dennis Hopper. You just do these things cause they sort of come naturally. Still, the scenery is awesome—nature at its most spacious and economical. New York eastern-establishment art is like the woods in any of the original thirteen colonies. Its complexity and denseness are obvious to anybody. The desert, by contrast, seems desolate and empty—even purposeless—to those accustomed only to oaks and streams. The truth about the desert is that it is simultaneously ferocious and delicate, without mucking up the main ingredient—light—with unnecessary foliage and moisture. His work is resilient enough to have deserved several exhibitions with perhaps the premier purveyor of contemporary art in New York.
