Beautiful cool day with a hike in mix of sun and mostly cloud. Later start precluded getting up all the way to Elk Mountain. Much quieter than I expected on Labor Day. Definitely make your way to the top of Maiden Peak and past that to the wilderness camping area a mile past. Parking at Deer Park TH is limited and the road up is a bit narrow in places. Good trail all the way. The first few miles in are fairly covered but at maybe around mile everything opens up. Absolutely amazing scenery and views of the Olympics. Highly highly highly recommend this. First time hiking in the West US, my main frame of reference is section hiking the Appalachian trail every year. The hardest uphill sections are relatively short, but towards the end they are pretty exposed with steep drop offs.

Hiked up to Mt Thurston today, Feb The trail to Elk up until last few hundred meters is in great condition and while steep in sections and hard work, doable in regular hiking shoes. After the first view point though, it gets icy and slippery so spikes are a must. Today was not the best of weathers but still a dozen or so groups on the trail, including quite a few with dogs. I went on towards Thurston and there were some tracks, but only one fresh set from today.
