No real difference, especially if both heads and block are cast iron. The important thing is to have the hole for the coolant passage in the right place on each bank. You will always end up with one face of the gasket on the block on one side while the other face on the other bank. Similar facing against the heads. Gasket just repackages head gaskets. Are these the MLS gaskets or the single layer steel shim gaskets? Received 1 Like on 1 Post.
Print Thread. Does it matter which way it's installed? Raised embossed side towards block or heads on iron head ? Mr Gasket has been of no help and their instructions make no mention of it other than to say no sealer is required with these gaskets. Heads are already installed with one head gasket installed "up" and the other "down" Don't ask.

Read this post to learn which way to install a head gasket based on our research. You should install it facing the top of the engine block. Most gaskets only go one way, and the direction matters. If you install it backward, the gasket cannot carry out its function. If that happens, the coolant temperature will rise, and the car may overheat. Non-directional gaskets with no indicators of which side is up are also available.
