The game is set in the year , in the aftermath of a nuclear war that destroys most of the United States. In the expansion, the player character is hired as a private investigator to search for a missing girl in the isolated seaside community of Far Harbor. The game can be played in first-person or third-person perspective ; in either case, the player controls the protagonist throughout their investigation on The Island, a landmass off the coast of Maine. Far Harbor ' s main gameplay consists of quests and puzzle sections. Upon completing the quests in the game, the player is rewarded with bottle caps from Nuka-Cola bottles the franchise's main fictional currency , and experience points. The puzzles feature a variety of different game mechanics ; some require the player to hit targets with lasers, and others allow building using blocks. Announced in February , the expansion was influenced by player feedback regarding the base game's dialogue system , which was not considered to be as successful as the other game mechanics. The development team also noticed the players' interest in releases that added large amounts of explorable territory. There, the Sole Survivor will search for a young woman, Kasumi Nakano , and a colony of synths. This leads to the fighting between the Far Harbor citizens and the Children of Atom, but a greater plot involves a synth, who has ties with Nick Valentine. The add-on starts off with the quest Far From Home when the player character listens to a radio message from the Valentine Detective Agency after completing the quest Getting a Clue , or when the player goes to the Nakano residence possibly even before meeting Nick Valentine. Arriving at the office, Ellie Perkins will tell Nick and the Sole Survivor to investigate the case of Kasumi Nakano - the missing daughter of a fisherman living beyond the northeast boundaries of the Commonwealth. A brief investigation at the Nakano residence will tell the player that Kasumi believes herself to be a synth replacement, and that she's decided to leave her parents and travel to a place far north called Far Harbor to be with people like her.

The location is mostly on a dock, and comprised of a few still standing shops, as well as a tavern that you can rent a room from. Allen Lee runs the weapons and ammo shop next down, which includes a Weapons and Armor Workbench. Brooks sells general goods in the next building, while Doctor Teddy Wright runs a small clinic behind Brooks along with a Chemistry Station. Further down is an eating area with a Cooking Stove, with a sleeping area on the other side of the Last Plank tavern. Upstairs are more rooms, and a side room with a footlocker. Just outside Far Harbor, a lone island with a ruined building contains a Steamer Trunk. During the Cleansing the Land quest, it is possible to eliminate the entire populace of Far Harbor. This of course will render the town un-useable for the most part, and render any related quests failed.
