During a flashback scene in "F9," Han's survival is succinctly explained in a short flashback sequence that brings together moments from "Tokyo Drift" and the end of 's "Fast 6.
They're movies driven by big action, sure, but within that big action is a lot of spy movie narrative structuring, which means that even when you know the overarching plot, there are a few other things worth keeping straight in your head if you're going to follow along. That'll take up a lot of real estate in the new movie's story, to be sure, but there are other narrative threads the film is also likely to tug at, including perhaps the most exciting reveal from F9 : the long-awaited return of Han Sung Kang. So, before Fast X rolls around, let's take a look back at Han's death, rebirth, and current standing within the franchise, and what that might mean for the new film. First introduced in The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift , Han was seemingly killed in that film when his car was rammed by another mysterious vehicle, and eventually burst into flames. Dom showed up at the end of that film to proclaim that Han was "family," which set up a shift in the timeline that placed subsequent films in the series before the events of Tokyo Drift. At the end of the sixth film, the timelines converge, and we learn that Han's death was actually orchestrated by master criminal Deckard Shaw Jason Statham , deepening the animosity between the Toretto crew and the Shaw family. After Han's death, though, things shifted in terms of allegiances, and by the end of Fate of the Furious , the Shaw brothers and their mother, Queenie Helen Mirren , had become allies to Dom and his family, all while Han was seemingly still very dead. Rather than compromise the release of a tentpole film, Universal Pictures opted instead to put out "F9" at a time during which wide availability could be guaranteed. As a result of the delay , fans have long been waiting for the answers to certain questions about its contents. A reference to Paul Walker's character Brian O'Conner in a February trailer for "F9," for example, caused fans to speculate whether or not O'Conner might somehow factor into the new "Fast" story. Another lingering mystery prior to the release of "F9" was the appearance of Han Seoul-Oh Sung Kang in that same February trailer.

Though there's a lot to enjoy, and marvel at, with regards to the Fast and Furious franchise -- like how it went from an action series about street racing to basically becoming the A-Team franchise that the A-Team movie never manifested to now being such a bonkers cinematic universe that fans easily foresee its heroes venturing into space at some point -- Sung Kang's Han has remained one of the saga's most endearing, and enduring, characters. Which means a lot when you consider that we all watched him die back in the third film, 's The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.
