Even today, the game has a huge dedicated fanbase who play every day and love the game to bits. However, with such an overwhelmingly large world and game, how do you even begin to progress? Side quests are tasks you usually find throughout the game and are more optional. As such, they usually include cutscenes, voice acting, and even open up the major story and gameplay features. These include airship travel, personal mounts, grand company access, and more. Hence, people starting in Gridania might have a different experience from those starting in Lominsa. What now? These quests cover mostly level 1 to 50 and are part of the base game, A Realm Reborn. They were released in Patch 2.

Spurred on by the mysterious beings known as Ascians, Nael Van Darnus led the VIIth Legion to Carteneau where they waged a bloody battle to cast Meteor and drop the moon, Dalamud, on the continent ending all life and the Primal threat. However, upon its descent it was revealed the Dalamud was no natural moon but a massive prison for the Primal, Bahamut.

And the main story quest isn't bad at all, it does just have a lot of filler in it where there is just a lot of busywork with little happening narrative wise, but if you stick at it things do eventually improve and SE did learn from their mistake, the main scenario in the later expansions doesn't have anywhere near such filler and things are much more enjoyable, so it's just the beginning really that things are like that.
