Forest of Dean provides a great opportunity for both novice and experienced mountain bikers and Cannop Cycle Centre is the starting point for the trails that will take you on an adventure deep into the forest whatever your age or ability. Allow hrs. Type: XC. Trail Grade: Blue Moderate. Blue grade trails are suitable for intermediate cyclists or mountain bikers with basic off-road riding skills. The 'Verderer's Trail' is a 7-mile all-weather loop incorporates fast, flowing flat out corners, big berms and rollovers. Graded blue, but with some tricky challenges, the trail gently winds uphill before a swooping, flat top section and a brilliant descent on the Dragon's Tail that will have you hooting and hollering all the way back to the cycle centre. Trail Grade: Red Difficult. Red grade trails are suitable for proficient mountain bikers with good off-roading skills. The Freeminer Trail , designed, built and maintained by the DTV in partnership with the Forestry Commission, this challenging and varied single track can offer something to even the most demanding of riders, from tricky switchback climbs to rooty drops and hairpin bends. This centre, on the site of an old colliery, is the ideal place to start your cycling adventure. With a family cycling trail, blue and red graded cross-country trails and eleven downhill trails, the Forest of Dean Cycle Centre has something for everyone. The Colliers Trail is a waymarked circular route mainly on former railway lines with connecting routes to villages and picnic sites. This route has been especially surfaced and is suitable for all ages and abilities. The Verderers Trail is an exciting and adventurous blue-graded trail for both intermediate and experienced cyclists on mountain bikes, and is often referred to as one of the best blue trails in the UK.

The Colliers Trail is a circular 9-mile off-road cycling route around this beautiful ancient forest, well signposted and easy to follow, ideal for all ages and a great way to explore the Forest of Dean on two wheels. The most well known starting point for the trail is The Forest of Dean Cycle Centre at Cannop , bikes can be hired from here and there is a cafe, toilets, parking and a shop. However as the route is circular it can be begun from many easily accessible locations and if you are staying in the area you can even begin it from your holiday accommodation avoiding having to get into the car. Some of the paths on the trail are former railway lines so are long, straight and flat and the whole route has been especially surfaced so is ideally suited for all ages and abilities. The route passes through many highlights of the Forest including Cannop Ponds , the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail at Beechenhurst , the lake at Mallards Pike and several collieries as well as passing close to a number of towns and villages with connecting routes if you are staying nearby. Part of the trail takes you along the old Severn and Wye railway line passing former stations at Drybrook Road, Cannop Wharf and Speech House where old railway signs can still be seen. There are lots of picnic spots and cafes along the way too, perfect for a well deserved break, so why not make a day of it and get out on your bikes and explore the Forest of Dean with the family?

Shelley Robinson. Returning to the cycle centre I fancied more of a challenge and had a go at what used to be called the FoDCA trail but is now known as the Verderers Trail. Forest of Dean Cycle Centre. The start point is currently closed due to Covid. These paths are shared with walkers, runners, and cyclists, so care should be taken to accommodate all those who want to enjoy them.
